Should you be able to read German, read this: Kaltland, by Krampitz, Liske, Praekels.
It’s a comprehensive collection of stories, reportages, little and big excursions into the Germany(-ies) of the late 1980s until the late 1990s, from separation to “reunification”.
It paints a picture of disgusting racism, antisemitism, hatred, despair for everyone who”s “different” from what is said to be “normal”, of Nazis, of the non-reacting state, of people just standing around and looking instead of (re)acting, of stories that should be burnt into a collective mind and should never be forgotten.
It’s still true for today and it needs to be fought against. Bitterly.
